Why traditional cleaning cannot control microorganism levels

The most common type of bacterial; reproduction is binary fission, this involves the division of a single cell into two genetically identical daughter cells. Listeria, Salmonella, Tuberculosis, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and E coli all reproduce by binary fission.

Bacteria such as E. coli can replicate every 20 minutes, that means in less than 8 hours a single cell can become over 8 million cells.

Starting with a single cell in optimum conditions this would mean 2 cells 20 minutes later, then…. 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65539, 131072, 262144, 524288, 1048576, 2097152, 4194304, 8388608 cells or over 8 million just 8 hours later.

As most people are aware, we keep food in a refrigerator to slow bacteria growth, whilst listeria can double every 20 minutes at room temperature, in chilled conditions this slows to doubling roughly once every 24 hours. The success of many microorganisms is that they thrive in the same conditions as people, with toilets or washroom facilities often described as a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

However well a washroom facility is cleaned using traditional methods it’s impossible to eliminate all bacteria. Bacteria will continue to grow meaning without AIRsteril technology the risks and associated unpleasant odours will be an ongoing cause for concern.
